AaA4Question: What are common points of negotiating for buying and selling a home?

Answer: There are a number of items that most buyers and sellers discuss during negotiation. Here are a few common

  • Timeline. The time between closing and moving in on a home can be negotiated on both sides, especially if one or more of the parties needs to move right away.
  • Inspections. Most agents will work out a list of contingencies, which will ensure buyers are satisfied with the conditions of the home. Based on the inspection, agents will help write a contract that allows buyers and sellers to renegotiate if the conditions are not met.
  • Price. Price is always negotiable and is part of the “back and forth” action of buying and selling a home.
  • Home Warranty. A home warranty can be paid for by seller or buyer. Some sellers are willing to pay for it as a way of preempting any further responsibility, in case there are unforeseen problems with the home after closing.
  • Closing Costs. Buyers typically pay closing costs, but to sweeten the deal, sellers can offer to pay these costs instead.

These are not the only places to negotiate during the home buying or selling process. Talk to your real estate agent about how you can further negotiate when you plan to buy or sell.
